How is a code point different from UTF-8?

A code point is Unicode's ID for a character (e.g. 山 U+5C71); UTF-8 is the byte encoding (e.g. E5 B1 B1).

Why are some code points large?

Common chars sit in the BMP (U+0000–FFFF); emoji and rare scripts use supplementary planes U+10000+.

Use codePointAt() for the full value; charCodeAt() can split supplementary characters like emoji.
